Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of poorly positioned teeth and jaws. You might be surprised to learn that orthodontics is more than just cosmetic. Yes, braces will transform the look of your smile, but they also provide a healthier smile. If your teeth are misaligned, they can be difficult to keep clean, so by straightening them, it is easier to reach and clean every surface with your toothbrush and floss. Teeth that protrude out of the mouth are quite vulnerable to accidental damage, so orthodontics can leave your teeth safer. When the jaws are out of proper alignment, it can cause pain and poor function. Orthodontics will correct these issues as well.

Southern Dental Associates at The Heights is proud to offer both traditional braces and ClearCorrect Aligners.

What are Traditional Braces?

Most people are familiar with traditional braces. This form of orthodontic treatment has been common for many years and can be used to correct virtually any orthodontic issue including crooked teeth, crowding, gaps, overbite, underbite and crossbite. Traditional braces use metal brackets placed on the teeth that are connected with a wire. They require regular tightening to create steady pressure that will gradually straighten the teeth and align the jaw. With current orthodontic advances, the brackets used are now smaller, sleeker and more comfortable than ever before. Traditional braces are the most cost-effective orthodontic option, and they provide a faster treatment than some other options. What is ClearCorrect?

ClearCorrect has been popular in the US since 2009. These clear aligners work like other orthodontic appliances. They apply pressure in order to gradually move teeth and reshape the supporting bone. Patients have a series of clear aligners. Each aligner applies a little bit of pressure to the teeth to slowly guide them into the desired position. After the prescribed amount of time, you will change to the next aligner in the series. ClearCorrect can correct most orthodontic issues including gaps, crowding and bite issues. Patients especially like that they are virtually invisible!

To prepare for ClearCorrect, we will take impressions to determine exactly what needs to be done. This information will be sent directly to ClearCorrect. They will then create virtual models of your teeth from their current state to their desired final position. These models are printed on 3D printers as your aligners. Your Aligners must be worn all the time, only removing them to eat, brush and floss. When you complete your treatment, you will enjoy a healthier and more beautiful smile!
