What are Traditional Dentures?

At Southern Dental Associates, we custom-make our dentures from high-quality, gum-colored acrylic bases and natural-looking artificial teeth. The artificial teeth can be shaded to your preference or to match any remaining teeth. Depending on the extent of your tooth loss, we offer two types of dentures: full dentures and partial dentures.

What is the Difference Between Full and Partial Dentures?

Our dentist may recommend a set of full dentures for patients suffering complete tooth loss. Full dentures consist of an upper and lower denture. The upper denture is molded to fit the roof of your mouth and is worn over the gums. The lower denture is worn over your bottom gums in a U-shape to accommodate your tongue. For a more comfortable and long-lasting fit, you may use a denture adhesive.

If you suffer from partial tooth loss, our dentist may recommend a partial denture. The partial denture consists of two or more artificial teeth on a metal framework. What are Fixed Dentures?

If you are looking for a permanent tooth loss solution, our dentist recommends fixed dentures. Also known as implant-supported dentures, fixed dentures can be anchored to your jawbone using All-on-4 dental implants. The implants act as artificial tooth roots and provide a stable foundation for your dentures, increasing your bite strength and ensuring a permanent hold. Tooth implants also fuse to your jawbone, maintaining the structure of your jaws and preventing the tissue loss that occurs once you lose or extract a tooth.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

With proper at-home care, your dentures can last for many years before needing to be replaced. Be sure to see our dentist for a regular checkup to assess the condition of your dentures. Over time, your dentures will need to be adjusted (called a relining) to ensure a comfortable and secure fit. Your dentures may also need to be rebased. During a rebasing, we will make a new base while keeping the existing teeth.
